This year’s Opening Ceremony for the Surfers Paradise Festival 2012 was a spectacular community event! Aimed to get the people of Surfers Paradise involved and enthusiastic about the start of the annual festival, a 1,000+ persons large Lantern Parade was organised on Wednesday night 20 June, closing down the main streets of the beach city and the foreshore.
From vibrant musical groups to Japanese dancers to roller-skating hard rockers and the police marching band… There was a large variety of local talent present, supported by other members of the Surfers community carrying beautiful lanterns up to 2 meters large!
With 2 live crosses for Channel 9 news and weather taking place in the midst of the high decibel parade the coverage of the Opening Ceremony was extensive.
The Surfers Paradise beach was the final destination of the nearly 1km long parade, where an opening speech was made by Surfers Paradise Alliance CEO Mike Winlaw with a spectacular fireworks show to follow.
