Happy Birthday Surfers Paradise! On 1 December 1933, the little beachside town of Elston was officially christened as Surfers Paradise. The first holiday homes starter to appear and tourism was the town’s new destination.
On 1 December 2013 we celebrated Surfers Paradise’s 80th Birthday with a host of festivities on Surfers Paradise Foreshore! Hundreds turned out to witness the historical events taking place and to enjoy the abundance of entertainment throughout the morning including an impressive display of surf vehicles and muscle cars, a time capsule ceremony and speech by Mayor Tom Tate, the cutting of an iconic custom made birthday cake, an interesting history lesson and the opportunity to grab your very own cupcake.
An old time capsule, which was created 20 years ago, was revealed and a new one filled with mementos that capture Surfers Paradise past and present was buried on the Surfers Paradise Foreshore, to be opened on the 100th birthday of the famous holiday precinct.
At the conclusion of the event, skydivers fell from the clouds with red flares and landed on the beach, set on a background of second plane dragging a sky ad wishing Surfers Paradise a happy birthday.
