The largest Lunar New Year celebration on the Gold Coast was scheduled to be held on 31 January and 1 February 2020. There were 17,000 people expected at the event this year.
Together with the City of Gold Coast, our event coordinators had spent many months planning this amazing event. It was going to be an amazing day, jam-packed with spectacular cultural entertainment, delicious food, movie screening, comedy corner, and beautiful Chinese decorations.
And then COVID-19 happened….
Like many other Chinese celebrations around Australia (and the world), the decision was made to cancel the Lunar New Year celebrations on the Gold Coast. A disappointing outcome for everyone involved but unfortunately something out of everyone’s control.
Event cancellations don’t happen very often as it results in a large investment being lost.
Below are some interesting facts about the work that went into this event:
- Six (6) Months of Event Planning
- 7 Pre-event Meetings and Site Visits
- 177 hours of Event Organising
- 67 Suppliers & Stallholders confirmed
- 300 Paper lanterns put together
- 8 Hours of packing

It’s extremely unfortunate the Lunar New Year celebrations didn’t go ahead. Therefore, we don’t have any event photos. However, below is a photo of our custom made RAT that was specifically designed and produced to celebrate the Year Of The Rat.
Hopefully, this event will be back with flying colours in 2021!
