In early January 2012, Surfers Paradise got “all shook up” and was turned into a sensory swirl of jumpsuits, flared pants and blue suede shoes for the celebration of the King’s 77th birthday.
Elvis’ Birthday Bash, Australia’s first officially-endorsed Elvis tribute festival, was held from Friday 6 until Sunday 8 January and included classic Elvis movies screening on the beach, photo exhibitions and a tribute competition as guests were entertained with some of the 20th century’s finest rock ‘n’ roll ‘. Tribute artists from around the world battled it out to be named top impersonator of the King, who died in 1977 aged 42.
Elvis’s own tour manager and official photographer, Ed Bonja, was a judge, along with Gold Cost mayoral candidate and renowned “Aussie Elvis”, Dean Vegas.
